What is Molluscum-Contagiosum

Molluscum Contagiosum is a viral skin infection that caused raised, pearl- like papules or nodules on the skin .It is common skin disorder caused by a superficial skin infections with the poxvirus.

What are the symptoms of Molluscum Contagiosum

Molluscum Contagiosum is characterized by small bumps, flesh-colored, pink or white, that has a dimple or pit in the center.

  • They are small typically about a quarter inch (approx...2 to 5 millimeter) in diameter.
  • Characteristically have a small indentation or dot at the top.
  • Can become red and inflamed
  • Sometimes filled with thick white material
  • Sometimes itchy, sometimes painless
  • Can easily be removed by scratching or rubbing, which can spread the virus to adjacent skin.
  • Most often found in the trunk, face, eyelids, or genital area in temperate climates and on extremities in the tropics.
  • In children, bumps usually appear on the trunk, face, and arms .In sexually active teens and young adults, the bumps are usually located in the genital area.

What are the Causes?

  • It is sexually transmitted contagious disease.
  • Molluscum Contagiosum is transmitted by direct contact, either person to person or by shared items such as clothing, towels, and wash clothes.
  • MC can be spread by contact sports.
  • Furthermore, if a person touches the rash and then another part of his or her body, it can cause it to spread.
  • Although the contagiousness is generally low, it is not known for how long an infected person can transmit the virus.
