What is Chancroid

Genital Ulcer or Chancroid is very painful and has a number of unpleasant of side effects which can lead to severe health complications. Effective treatment for Chancroid is available from a dermatologists/venereologist.

What are the Symptoms of Chancroid?

The main symptom is genital sores that rupture after a few days .After an incubation period of one day to two weeks, Chancroid begins with a small bump that becomes an ulcer .Its soft to touch. 

Chancroid affects both male and female. In males bump shaped structures appear on penis or peri anal area. In Females bumps are noticeable on labia, cervix, vagina or rectum. These bumps like structures get filled with pus and when it breaks takes the shape of open sore which is very painful around the genital. These open sores are also known by the name ulcers. The size of ulcers varies from 1 cm to 3 cm in diameter. Ulcers take weeks to heal without medication and sometimes its bleeds or ooze pus. 

In few cases there is an inguinal lymphadenopathy .lymph glands becomes inflamed and tender. These lymph nodes sometimes ulcerate.

What are the Causes of Chancroid?

Chancroid is an infection that is caused by the fastidious gram-negative strepto bacillus Haemophilusducrey. Chancroid can be transmitted through direct, skin-to-skin contact with open sores that contain contagious Haemophilusducrey bacteria. After direct contact, the bacteria multiply, causing skin lesions and infected within lymph nodes .It can be transmitted through-

  • Vaginal intercourse.
  • Oral sex.
  • Anal sex.
  • Mutual masturbation.

Uncircumcised men are at three time’s greater risk than circumcised men for contracting Chancroid from an infected person.

What are the Medication and Treatment
  • The infection is treated with antibiotics, including azithromycin, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, and erythromycin. Large lymph node swelling need to be drained, either with a needle or local surgery.
  • Abstinence(not having sex)
  • Mutual monogamy (having sex with only one uninfected partner)
  • Latex condoms for vaginal, oral and anal sex.
